Our History
On January 9th, 2005, the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) brought an end to the brutal civil war that has engulfed Sudan since before its independence in 1956. The CPA established the semi-autonomous Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS), in the southern part of the Republic of Sudan. This was effectively transformed into the Government of the Republic of South Sudan on July 9th, 2011. With the celebration of independence slowly coming to an end, the South Sudanese citizens are demanding the fulfillment of a long-awaited dream: freedom from oppression and domination, justice and equality, democracy and economic prosperity, peace and tranquility. The Nile Institute for Peace and Development was established on April 3, 2013, as a response to the need for peace and development throughout South Sudan and the Diaspora. The Nile Institute is the initiative of South Sudanese, friends of South Sudan, and those in the Diaspora, in collaboration with those in South Sudan to find durable solutions to the problems affecting various communities in the country.
